We did have updates in the first version of Lorel: 

The Lorel Query Language for Semistructured Data, Serge Abiteboul,
Dallan Quass, Jason McHugh, Jennifer Widom, Janet Wiener,
International Journal on Digital Libraries (JODL 97), 1996.

This was not exactly the XML model (1996!) but Lorel was adapted to
XML.  Most of the ideas apply to XML.  A main difference would be for
taking into account order: e.g., inserting a new product just after a
given one.
