patent policy vs open source and free software

Hi,

I'd like to add my voice to those telling that the RAND policy on W3C
standards should not be adopted in any way.

As many contributors already said it, the success of the web is
largely base on open source and free software that will no longer be
possible in a work where standard can be subject to restrictions
because they're patented.

Accepting patents on W3C standards will probably lead to a fork where
the free software community will boycott and try to make the
encumbered standards useless or worthless.

My experiences as a developper for XFree86 and OpenBSD have shown that
this kind of reaction have already happened and succeded (for instance
by getting the X.org consortium to revert its licensing change on
X11R6.4)

NO PROPRIETARY STANDARDS, IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM.
