The proposed W3C patent policy will not benifit the web community and will drive software producers to find other, non-patented, standards. W3C has long been viewed as a leader in the struggle for an open standards driven web. The proposition to suddenly start charging royalties for standards which were previously free will ultimately damage the consortium's credibility and hurt the web community.
