While I know that some WG members are working on this, nothing is available
yet.

At this point, I don't know whether W3C will have the resources to do a SMIL 
player. However, I'm reasonably confident that member companies will do 
implementations.

JMF sounds like a good starting point, as does Quicktime, ActiveMovie or similar 
multimedia environments.

If you're interested in doing an implementation, send me mail - I got a couple
of ideas on how to proceed.
