hdotsfor?

How would one implement the AMSLaTeX \hdotsfor[]{} command in Presentational MathML?

Clearly, one wants an  <mtd columnspan="...">. But I have no idea how to obtain an arbitrary-length row of dots, much less specify an inter-dot spacing.
