Turn persistent connections OFF

Can someone point me to methods by which I can turn persistent
connections OFF.? Is this controlled by the server? Can the client tell
the server to close the connection right after the request is complete?

Or in short...I have a requirement that tells me to close the connection
right after the request is complete. How Can I do this?
