static libraries for win32?

I see that the VC6 .dsp files provided in the 5.4.0 archive are building 
  DLLs and import .lib files. Is there an easy way to get static 
MSVC-friendly libraries? (i.e. for static linking against the final app, 
no implicit .dll dependencies)
