Thanks for your thorough analysis and your useful patches. I just commited 
them to the CVS base.

I protected both patches so that they're effective only on Windows
platforms. For the first one, the Unix doc for connect didn't say we should 
use EINVAL, so I left it as it was. For the second patch, the select works
ok under Unix :)
