Catching Username on Server side

I have an HTML file in a secure directory because of which a
username/password 
dialog is thrown up when somebody tries to access it. I want to use this 
username/password to do some more validation - in other words, I need to
find 
the username/password that a person accessing the site entered. Is this 
possible - if so, how?
