i apologise for the cut-and-paste error in the previous post - i did use the
-host option. the invocation should have been:

foghorn% java w3c.jigsaw.http.httpd -host foghorn.Reston.mci.net \ -root
/home/sailors/ams/s olaris/Jigsaw/Jigsaw

with the same results.
