New public-i18n-cjk mailing list

public-i18n-cjk is a public mailing list, maintained by the W3C, to bring together experts in the internationalization of the Web for Chinese, Japanese and Korean. By participating in this list you are part of the W3C Internationalization Interest Group.

There is already a list where people can converse in Japanese about html5, and a proposal for a similar list to support discussions in Korean. This public-i18n-cjk list provides a way to open up discussion from these lists or on other topics at the appropriate point to non-native speakers and representatives of the various Working Groups at the W3C (and therefore is for discussion in English). We encourage people on the non-English lists to, from time to time, post summaries of their discussions or proposals to this list so that they can be considered and discussed more widely.

The list will also provide an opportunity for anyone to comment on or ask questions about W3C deliverables or technologies relating to support of Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages and scripts. For example, one use of the list will be to receive English feedback on the Japanese Layout Requirements document (or any other similar documents in the future). By subscribing to this list the commenter can receive feedback on their points and discuss topics as needed.

The intention of the list, however, is to also provide a forum for discussion of any aspect of W3C technologies that relates specifically to improving support of Chinese, Japanese and Korean. For example, it provides a useful forum for discussion of ruby annotation or vertical text among people that span CSS, SVG, XSL, HTML and Internationalization Working Groups. It will also provide a way to share understanding, cross-fertilize and leverage viewpoints and ideas that are common to all three Far Eastern scripts.

Similar lists that are also part of the Internationalization Interest Group include public-i18n-bidi (for discussion of issues related to Arabic, Hebrew, etc scripts) and public-i18n-indic (for discussion of requirements for South Asian script and language support).

The Japanese Layout Task Force members are already subscribed to this list. If you are not subscribed already, you can join the list by sending email to public-i18n-bidi-request@w3.org with the word 'subscribe' in the subject field. The archive is publicly visible at http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-i18n-cjk/

Please feel free to spread the word about this list to others.

Best regards,
RI
