Unicode

Dear all,

I am a Ph.D. student at University of Illinois at U-C and am supposed to
build an application to convert Korean language to English through unicode
as a research project.
Since I hardly understand how unicode works, it was difficult for me to get
started.

Could you please let me know where to find references and examples or
software to do so?
