AFAIK:
Initially "name" was removed from the HTML-DTD with version 4.0, because
it should be replaced with "id". Because of a Bug in Netscape 4.x
JavaScript, which cannot adress an <img> via "id", it was implemented
into HTML 4.01 transitional. But the attribute is deprecated and does
neither exist in HTML4.x/XHTML1.0 strict DTD nor in XHTML 1.1 DTD.
