XHTML and newline

Hello,

Sorry for my poor English and for this newby question. I have a
problem with XHTML and newlines. I want to do a simple newline (not a
new paragraph) in an Strict XHTML page and I can't. If I put a <BR> or
a <P>, I must close it and the horizontal space is too big (because
browsers don't understand good XHTML, I think)... How can I do?
