meta tag key words

I'm writing the meta tag descriptions and keywords for our site and am
trying to figure out if there is a standard number of keywords to included
in a general tag.

Can you have too many keywords on a page or does the law of diminishing
returns come into effect after a certain point? I haven't figured out what
the best route to take is.
