If that happens (and admittedly it happens often), it's
because of a browser bug.  See

The Greek letters and mathematical symbols can be presented
using numeric character references. That works on Netscape 4 too.
But take care - a large number of browsers still don't
support them.

I don't see anything on-topic for this list in this usse
(this deals with browser support to currently defined HTML
