It would be rather tool-dependent, wouldn't it?
If I build my pages using an AppleScriptable text editor, then
my metadata-updater (metadater?) would best be written in AppleScript.
If I built them in Frontier, I'd likely write it in UserTalk.
If I built them in FoxPro, I'd likely write it in Xbase.

That seems to imply that you've used "bad" ones.
What were the failings of the one[s] you tried?
