In SPAN, DIR is the equivalent of LRE/RLE, bidi embedding. This means a new
level of bidi nesting. BDO is the equivalent of LRO/RLO, bidi override, that
means ignore the bidi properties of the characters and assume the override.

LANG has no effect on bidi.

If you have no bidi characters in the text then both tags are no practical
effect.
