Here are two pointers that should get you started with transparent GIFs:

One of these should point to a couple of sites that have an automatic
on-line gizmo that will convert your GIF to a transparent version... but you
must put your .GIF in your web directory and be able to supply a URL that
points to it. You specify what color background you want, the usual gray, or
whatever, and then the site returns the URL of the translated GIF.
