area element does not takes name attribute

having read the html 4 errata[1], i'm still led to believe
that the html 4.01 specification gives "area"[2] as taking
the "name" attribute (under _Attributes defined elsewhere_).

that section appears to have merged "map" and 
"area" attributes, or am i misreading?

the index of html 4 attributes[3], correctly omits "area" as
taking the "name" attribute, while my validator[4] concurs.

can you clarify?
