Input selection properties?

One of the DHTML object model features that I believe would help in
scripting is a way for a script to access the current selection in
<TEXTAREA> or <INPUT TYPE="Text"> tags. This functionality would be very
useful to implement such features as client editing of HTML pages, and other
editing utilities. Perhaps it could be implemented in the document model:
Form.Name.Inputname.selStart
Form.Name.Inputname.selLength
