setindex is an xforms action that sets the internally maintained 'cursor' of an xforms repeat element.  This would correspond to which instantiation of the repeat's contents are being worked on.  
 
setindex is not related to navindex.

Actually, adjusting tab order by XForms-style declarative computes is a feature of XFDL-- no scripting required.
 
XFDL currently supports an XML model system for hosting XForms instances.  We currently anticipate migration of many more XFDL constructs to XForms syntax where XForms actually has the equivalent feature.
 
However, the point of XForms is to be consumed by another host language whose additional features can be exploited.  Extension of non-scripted computes to calculation of UI properties like colors, tab order, and so forth will continue to be one of the advantages of XFDL as a host language for XForms (another is, of course, secure digital signatures).

Adjusting navigation order would almost certainly require script. This is the case not just for XForms, but also HTML forms, InfoPath, PDF, etc... basically any forms system I know of. :-)

Thanks for the info.  For item (3), in Access or VC++, one can play around with the tab indexes so that it can tab to those fields when check box is selected.
Is there a equivalent in XForms ?  Or can you point me in the right direction as to how ti can be done.  Thanks.
