Short answer:

NMTOKEN(S) are
* for low level markup
* not included in XForms Basic
* based on XML "Name" characters

ListItem(s) are
* for general purpose lists
* included in all levels of XForms
* not based on XML "Name" characters -- in fact everything but whitespace is
allowed.

These datatypes mentioned in Chapter 5.2 sound like xsd:NMTOKEN / 
xsd:NMTOKENS. If that is the case it may make things clearer, at least for 
those who understand a little XSD Schema (W3C XML Schema) to say that and 
then use the existing test as explanation.

If this point has been made previously please forgive me but I haven't had 
time to check all posts to the list.
