XForms vs XUL

Being new to the area of XML-based user interfaces, I'm curious as to why
there are two (or more?) competing formats.

Both XForms and XUL seem to this neophyte to address the same issues,
so some enlightenment as to why a developer would choose one over the
other would be greatly appreciated.
