although most people use elements like 
<p id="fred">   can spaces be valid  such as
<p id  =     "ethel">
if this is legit then i must go back and do a bit of redesign on
my link checker ... only found the quirk cuz one of my pages 
had a space and the link worked ok .... my checker flagged
as a problem  but is it ....  the spec is vague on this and all
examples have no spacing .... puzzled boy in Great White North
