It *is* correct and it *did* pass the W3C validator just as shown.

Please re-read the document at
http://www.htmlhelp.com/reference/html40/tables/col.html
which clearly says the colgroup is optional (may be contained in
COLGROUP or [directly in] TABLE).

By the way, I tried adding a COLGROUP but it still didn't make Amaya
display it correctly.
