It seems depends by the inclusion of the square breckets, see the two
examples:

<p>xyz <sup>[<a>abc</a>]</sup></p>

<p>xyz <sup><a>[abc]</a></sup></p>

in the first case Amaya (seems to be) add an BR like elemet an go on the
line below, in fact the first bracket is superscript, the text and the
second bracket is not (imho) subscrit but only rendered in the line below.
