font rendering

Why is the font rendering so ugly with 8.5 (debian linux) ? It's ok with other gtk-1 apps here, so shouldn't be an X Server issue.  This is Xorg, but with XFree (before) it wasn't better.
And lots of fonts installed. Any other gtk-1 app looks fine...

Can i configure fonts via Xresources ?

Maybe it's getting better with the 9.x branach ?
