insert time stamp

Is it possible to change the format of the inserted time stamp?  My
mostly American audience will be confused by the European convention
(day-month-year).  I'd prefer to have it written out; for example
"Saturday, March 12, 2005." 

Or barring that, at least have the option to do month-day-year.  Thanks.
