I've updated the driver for the Intel VGA to one released on 29th of 
April 2005 (WHQL certified) but the results I get are still the 
same. :-\

This one worked - the problem disappeared when I've moved the 
"Hardware Acceleration" slider between "None" and "Full" just one 
step close to "None" (disabled all but basic acceleration). This 
probably gives some minor UI performance penalty but as overall it 
is not that noticeable because I don't have any applications 
requiring fast advanced graphics on that machine.
