Amaya 8.6 does not start

I am now running Amaya 8.5 again.  I downloaded Amaya 8.6 twice, once by
html and once by ftp; no difference.  8.6 just won't start.  No message of
any kind, no indication of any activity.  No Amaya process visible in the
Task Manager.  Nothing.  So, uninstalled it and went back to 8.5.   I'm
sure this isn't what's you expect, any suggestions would be welcome.

I'm running Windows XP Pro on an IBM Thinkpad R50.
