Help, please: Can't get 4.3.2 to Create anything on Windows 98

Help, please. I would like to get a cheap math authoring (to printer)
program. The system functions normally for a Windows 98 system.
I am not computer naive (background in computer graphics programming),
though I must be stupid or something?

0. Boot system: Windows 98 Second Edition, 128 MB, Intel Celeron
(Would prefer Solaris, but not an option this instant).
1. Open Amaya 4.3.2
2. New XHTML document at default C:\PROGRAM FILES\AMAYA\amaya\New.html
(Would prefer to be able to set default C:\Alan\Math\new.html)
3. Click inside window "New.html". It shifts from gray to gold color.
4. No response to typing. No response to Types->Heading->H1

Same thing for a new MathML document.

If in #2 I explicitly type in C:\Alan\Math\Temp\new.html, then I
can type stuff into the document and save it. However, as soon as I
try to create any math, it crashes when I try to save the document.

AMAYA caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 0167:bff7a388.
