IMO, the fact that italics are not displayed is a feature :-)

Actually on Solaris, 2.5pre performs differently.

Second fragment is correct ("I'm" is in italic, the rest in bold)
First fragment has "Hello, " in bold, "I'm" in italic, "doing fine" 
in normal text.
