Build error. Deb under Amd64 suffix or operands invalid common_x 86_asm.S

Building the lastest download of Amaya.
uname -a reports:
2.6.22-1-mepis64-smp #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Feb 18 23:03:02 EST 2008 x86_64
GNU/Linux.

I downloaded & installed a number of packages before this would configure
and begin to make, including the latest gtk+, glib, pango, and (after the
first failure) the latest gnu make.
