RE: keyboard accessible video player

Hi All

Pierre Frederiksen at Vision Australia has developed a new player - please note this is a work in progress but you can test it out now:

http://webski.x10.mx/yt/

It uses hidden HTML controls to supply keyboard and screen reader access and an ARIA-live region to supply state information ("Playing", "Paused", "Muted" etc.) for screen reader users.

The embedded YouTube player does not provide scripted access to all functions (for example you can't specify caption colour) therefore the standard controls have been kept for the benefit of mouse users (and keyboard users in IE). The alternative controls only become visible on keyboard focus.

The alternative controls also offer some 'extras' e.g. press "F" for frame-by-frame movement and an editable time field where you can type a time and press Enter to move the timeline.

The embedded YouTube player does not provide full scripted access to captions. If a user has turned captions on in the standard player then they cannot be turned off using scripting, so caption control buttons in the alternative controls depend on which setting the user has via the standard controls.

Pierre would welcome any feedback

Hi,

We have full keyboard access on the BBC Live TV Channels accessed via iPlayer (e.g. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/tv/bbc_one_london/watchlive). There are a couple of issues worth noting:

 * There is labelling for screen readers throughout the player so that you can access all functionality i.e. Play/Pause, Mute, Volume, Forward/Rewind, Jump to the start of a programme and Watch live.
 * Aside from using the TAB and ARROW keys to navigate we have added alternative means to access some functionality using keyboard shortcuts however depending on the screen reader and browser combination there are some inconsistencies.
 * Full screen is less stable due to Adobe restrictions.
 * Instructions can be found under the heading 'Watching Live TV' here: http://iplayerhelp.external.bbc.co.uk/help/access_iplayer/readers
 * This is only available within the UK I'm afraid (a BBC licensing issue http://iplayerhelp.external.bbc.co.uk/help/outside_the_uk/outsideuk)

All feedback welcome, this is the proverbial work in progress.

Henny

Subject: keyboard accessible video player

Hi,

I am really interested to know if anyone has come across controls for an embedded Youtube video (Flash or HTML5) player that are reasonably keyboard accessible with at least a few browsers. I have been looking and haven't found one.

Thanks,
Roger
