As a case in point about the difficulty of maintaining text
only sites:

The newest redesign of Altavista blew their text only page
--the main text-only page is still there, but the results
you get are all wrapped in a <PRE> element,
which means that a correctly implemented browser wont
necessarily make the links in the hit list hot.
