Minutes:

JT: Background to SMIL issue

GF: Outlines his background.

GF: Gives a short intro to SMIL and players.

GF: No authoring support for SMIL 2.0 yet. For SMIL 1.0 there is a Grims editor, Sausage SMIL editor, Real System, Hot Media, Homesite, etc.

WL: Are they accessible to authors?

GF: In general, no.

JT: Do any have caption prompts etc.

GF: No. Grims editor has the ability to add captions.

JT: How would you recommned developers get accessibility into the tools?

GF: need preview, simple editing, etc.

WL: What about Mac studio?

JT: Could use livestage pro.

GF: Magpie version 2 will do that stuff.

HS: That software is intended for home videos not web sites.

GF: Software is getting easier to use but still require mouse.

JT: Any problems with conversion.

GF: No problem with quicktime. With RealText there can be delays since the text is stored separately.

CMN: What formats should be used across platforms. MPEG, MOV(sometimes)

JT: Are there conversion tools.

GF: MediaCleaner - can do some conversions and preserve text (as open captions).

JT: Any new access additions to SMIL we should know about.

GF: Keep tuned, some things will be coming out.

CMN: Can SMIL2 play on a SMIL1 player?

GF: Probably not.

Plenary talk --------

GF leaves

PJ: Would you have deaf people writing captions?

JT: Then they can create different versions from an original caption.

LM: Or they could caption sign language.

LM: Are we taling mainly about videos?

CMN: Internet radio - captions

General talk about captionning services

Authoring tools are sparse on encouragement for accessibility

JT: Expensive video tool (Virage) does some voice rec of video to use as searchable time code indices.

Lots of this multimedia will be for education

HS: Are there any holes in ATAG that don't cover SMIL properly?

CMN: Guidelines ok

WL: We need more techniques.

PJ leaves

JT: We need best practices - use script to extract captions etc.

CMN: Captions from the teleprompter

Conclusion: ATAG is still holding up. But lots of techniques required.

JT: Have we covered the SMIL technical note?

HS, CMN: will have to look.

JT: IMS (Instructional Management System) - courseware standards should be in techniques as well.
