News Release: CSS Fonts: Bringing online typography up to the standards long used—and indeed taken for granted—in print

Dear Media, Analysts and Friends of W3C,

For many years printed publications have been able to take great advantage of a range of powerful font capabilities to control the appearance of text: kerning, layout of numbers, use of ligatures, small caps, etc.

Today W3C Announces CSS Fonts 3 is a W3C Recommendation. https://www.w3.org/TR/css-fonts-3/ With CSS WebFonts proven to be interoperably implemented in several browsers, web developers can now use them with confidence.

While CSS Fonts 3 is now at recommendation there is more to come: the CSS Fonts 4 specification is already starting to see implementation in all modern browsers. Variable fonts give improved richness, control and variety from a single font download. CSS control of multicolored fonts brings a new dimension hitherto only seen in print.
