Problems with Validator

All of a sudden today I am having problems with the validator.

Even though my file is XHTML 1.0 Transitional it is still checking it  
against html 4.01.  When I change it to tell it xhtml it still shows  
doc type as html 4.01.

I am able to validate my pages by loading the page, viewing source,  
and then copying all, and pasting it into direct input.
