help! long e

Greetings,

I have been searching the web for information on special characters... I
find it interesting and bizarre that there are no characters for doing
long (or short) vowels (straight or upcurved bar over vowel). I've found
grave, acute, tilde, umlaut, ring. How do we do long vowels??
