PhD vacancy@TU Delft. Data Science – Semantics & Quality of Big Data

The Web Information Systems group at the Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands, in a collaboration with Capgemini, is looking for one PhD researcher, whose research will focus on:

*Data Science – Semantics & Quality of Big Data*

= Context =

This PhD-project is part of a collaborative research program on Big Data Science that involves Delft Data Science (DDS), TU Delft’s data science program, and Capgemini. The program investigates how publicly available big data can be systematically utilized in industrial and societal contexts, to: 1) augment and enrich the information content in an existing business system; or 2) compensate the absence of data that is impossible to obtain in a timely manner. The program includes several connected PhD-projects, each defining the work of a PhD-student and a team of Capgemini and DDS staff. The common theme of the projects is to relate external, poorly structured and unanticipated big data to the at the time available internal well-structured data.

= Job description =

This research project involves the Web Information Systems (WIS) research group in Computer Science and Capgemini. It concerns with combining data present in internal business systems, with big data that are produced outside of the system, to achieve pre-defined business goals. To enable this integration at scale, the properties of the involved data sources need to be understood, including their (latent) structure, semantics, and quality.

This project is aimed at the theoretical understanding of the differences in semantics and quality of internal system data and external big data as well as the implications for their combined use for analytics. It will then use that theoretical understanding to create technology to enable the design and use of big data injection in practice.

Research topics for the candidate include models and technologies to study and integrate the various data sources, as well as high-performance, scalable, distributed data management technologies to support big data analytics.

The project will follow a case-driven approach, and will focus on representative application areas from Capgemini practice (e.g. fraud analytics, customer value analytics, master data management). It will produce proof-of-concept technology that allows designers to reason about the injection of big data, and discuss with data scientists and analysts what knowledge they might want to get from them in terms of semantics and quality.

= Requirements =

. Master’s degree in computer science, data science, or a related discipline
. Knowledge in the areas of big data, data science, databases, semantic web, information architecture, or related areas
. Able to rapidly prototype Web applications with a modern technology stack
. Skilled in data processing, (large-scale) data analysis, and software engineering
. Strong communicative skills and able to articulate the subject matter to relevant stakeholders
. A passion for big data, the ability to collaborate in inter-disciplinary research, and the academic skills to be part of a research team aiming to make a high impact.

= Terms and conditions =
