What is a SPARQL -endpoint-?

Hi everybody,

I'm a bit fuzzy about what a SPARQL endpoint is.
I understand what SPARQL is, but not what the
endpoint part is.

Is it a server software? Is it a set of functionality?
Is it an interface between applications?

Can somebody enlighten me?
