Being able to follow your nose to more information about the term (human and/or machine readable) reduces the risk of misunderstanding. Use of a URI allows independent definition without the risk of naming clashes. Terms like owl:sameAs (along with many others from RDFS and OWL) alow linking of terms. Seems a pretty good combination.
