yes it is possible, but I think that your first example was, syntactically,
wrong. As far as I can see, it should be:

<owl:intersectionOf rdf:parseType="Collection">
 <owl:Class rdf:about="#ParticipatingRoleAndDomain"/>
 <owl:Class>
  <owl:unionOf rdf:parseType="Collection">
   <owl:Class rdf:about="#ClassOfArrangedIndividual"/>
   <owl:Class rdf:about="#ClassOfEvent"/>
   <owl:Class rdf:about="#ClassOfPeriodInTime"/>
   <owl:Class rdf:about="#IndividualDimension"/>
   <owl:Class rdf:about="#Property"/>
   <owl:Class rdf:about="#Status"/>
  </owl:unionOf>
 </owl:Class>
</owl:intersectionOf>

The collection should refer to a sequence of classes, whereas owl:unionOf is not
a class but owl:property. So you have to define a class that is defined to be
the union, and that class can be part of the outermost collection.
