Using MediaWiki as a CMS

Has anyone looked into using a Mediawiki instance as the backend for a
normal/modern looking site?

I'm imagining URLs like http://www.w3.org/egov/foo being a modified
proxy for a part of the egov wiki with wiki URLs like
http://www.w3.org/egov/wiki/pubsite/foo.

The group needs a site for the general public that looks nothing like a
wiki ( maybe looking something like http://www.data.gov ) but I think it
would be good to have the content managed using the same general tool
the group uses for everything else.

The proxy could be as simple as extracting everything in a div with a
hardcoded id and reframing it in a new HTML page with different CSS. Or
maybe it could be smarter, giving some support for nagivation, somehow.

Anyway, I just started thinking about this yesterday, and wondered if
someone has explored it already. I've looked a bit through the
mediawiki extensions, and haven't seen anything like it, but there are a
lot of extensions, and I might be missing it.
