But I'm not sure why you put p inside excerpt. How about:

<p><excerpt><q>rhubarb rhubarb rhubarb</q> <cite><a
href="http://www.example.com">Nemo, Works, IV</a></cite></excerpt></p>

and

<p><excerpt><blockquote><p>rhubarb rhubarb rhubarb</p><p>bla bla
bla</p></blockquote><cite><a href="http://www.example.com">Nemo, Works,
IV</a></cite></excerpt></p>

These examples omit the square brackets around cite, since one could add
those with CSS and they'd make problems if one wished to style the cite
as a footnote.
