Use cases for web based signage.

Dear all,

Hello, I'm Gisung Kim from Korea, a researcher at IT Convergence Research
Center of KAIST.

I would like to share some issues which seem to be considered in this BG.

My co-workers and I have focused on 'context-aware digital signage' which
recognizes ambient surroundings to provide timely proper services.

We read the editor's draft and it covers various research aspects of web
based signage.

We are not sure that our suggestions are somewhat similar to the draft or
It is already discussed before in this BG.

It is welcomed of you to give us comments. The suggested issues are
followings:

*1. Displaying different contents according to a distance between a signage
and users. *

When a signage is located far from its viewers, detailed information
consisting of small letter information or image is of no use.

On the contrary, if a viewer is close to a signage enough to touch the
signage, it would be better that the size of letters or image is rather
small.

Touch screen input or analyzing image source captured by embedded camera
can be used to calculate the distance.

*2. Placing contents and buttons with considering the physical aspects of
users*

A digital signage is usually for public and used for adverting.

It is very important to place contents adaptive to the physical aspects of
users.

This can help to make various users having different physical aspects to
pay attention to the signage.

The placement of buttons for user interaction should be considered.

If the signage is wide that the user cannot touch both edges simultaneously
without movement, it is necessary to place the buttons depending on the
user's position.

The height of user is also required to be considered. We have seen many
cases that buttons of a signage are designed without considering it

Facial detection from camera analysis might be used to be aware of the
user.

*3. Changing color of contents or brightness of screen depending on the
ambient illumination around the signage.*

To deliver displayed information effectively or to provide helpful
information, it is required to reflect the ambient information.

The ambient illumination information can be used to improve the emotional
effects of information displaying.

Web content designers might want to display contents very brightly during
the daytime in outdoor,

while to display them in less brightness at night, for the best displaying
quality for the viewers.

The digital signage is located in various venues and surrounding
illumination changes hour by hour.

So, it would be more convenient for designers to design the displaying
adaptive in advance and use the content in wide situation.

*4. Using multi-screen effects - Partial migration of web contents from
signage to mobile phone.*

Smart phone has become a common device today. People bring it everywhere
they go.

They can use it as the second screen which provides additional information
pertaining to digital signage displaying contents.

Following figure shows an example.

A man watches a movie preview on a digital signage which is to advertise
the movie.

His smart phone discovers the signage and synchronizes content displaying.

He can find out additional information of the film including a brief
synopsis, main director and stars, the nearest theater, etc.

In current document for "web-based signage use cases and
requirements<http://www.w3.org/community/websignage/wiki/Web-based_Signage_Use_cases_and_Requirements#R9._Synchronizing_contents>
",

there's a discussion for synchronizing contents between a personal device
and signage displays.

In addition to sharing the same content, we would like to add issues of
using multi-screen for displaying multi-dimensional information, to
provide rich user services.

Web content designer will be able to mark additional information which can
be shown in a mobile phone

This is the end of our proposed issues for this letter. We are
investigating on related web technologies.

We expect your comments on them.

Thank you.

Best regards,

Gisung Kim
