RE: Zoom call this week? Any agenda+ requests?

Thank you Jason,
It makes perfect sense to consider “progressive font enrichment” as universally applicable technology that is capable to benefit all websites, regardless of language / geographic regions the serve. Advanced typographic features and variable fonts in particular will increase font load demands, and the technology that eliminates bottlenecks effect on resource load and allows good web typography to take the center stage is universally a good thing.

Apart from generally positive (and fairly large volume) response to my newsletter and post last week, I don’t have anything to report. There were a few questions raised on Twitter about privacy and security, which would be good to discuss as things move further along. So far the post on my site has been viewed over 1,600 times since Friday. So comparatively speaking a decent level of interest.

One interesting observation about how this might benefit even Western language sites is that we could see the inclusion of much more complete sets of OpenType features in addition to variable fonts without download penalty. That would enable much better use of different sorts of figures, fractions, etc. that we can typically leverage these days.

To me this strengthens the argument that we don’t want to base our requirements solely on current usage (i.e. 'only using 3 weights' or 'never accessing alternate glyphs or numerals’) as those are constraints driven as much by current technical performance limitations rather than what is or is not considered good typography. Not that I feel we’re necessarily doing this, but it’s a good reminder overall.

Folks,

I don’t have anything on my list to discuss this week. We have quite a few topics we identified for continued discussion in the past few weeks, but none of them have materialized yet to warrant a call.
If I don’t hear from you any proposed agenda+ topics, I am inclined to cancel the call this week (tomorrow).

Thanks,
Vlad
