If a term is used in many places (like 'Document pointer') it makes sense  
IMHO to keep those definitions in one central place, such as section 2.2.  
Especially given the fact that the definition of this particular term is  
rather simple, and doesn't really depend much on the surrounding text.

For other more lengthy defintions it can indeed be better to define them  
in place, agreed.
