It's not merely a cosmetic concern, if the user is on a bad network the whole tab can freeze for a long time.

Everyone I know who works on the web platform takes compat and interop very seriously, but they're not the *only* concern and doesn't *always* trump all others. I don't know how sync XHR will work out, it can't be removed right now at least. I kind of doubt the deprecation is going to help drive down usage much, which was the point of this issue to begin with.
